| Emma Jean Douglas |
The decomposed body of Emma Jean Douglas was found in a wooded area off Osborne Road in Richmond County on May 16, 2001. Douglas had been shot two times in the head with either a 38 or 357 caliber pistol. Douglas was identified by dental records submitted by the Sanford Police Department pursuant to a statewide law enforcement message that was sent out by the Richmond County Sheriff's Department on May 16, 2001.
The investigators found that a missing person's report for Douglas was filed with the Sanford Police Department on March 1, 2001 by the victim's daughter. The missing person's report indicated that no one had talked with Douglas since February 18, 2001.
The investigators found that Douglas' car was located on February 18, 2001 abandoned in a vacant lot across the street from the residence of Josephus Douglas, Emma Jean Douglas' estranged husband. Josephus Douglas lives at 2647 Fayetteville Street in Sanford, N.C.
The investigators have focused their investigation on Joe Douglas. Even though they were separated, Emma Jean Douglas would spend time at the residence of Joe Douglas. Emma Jean Douglas was last seen alive on February 17, 2001 at the residence of Joe Douglas. Joe Douglas has been arrested at least twice for physically assaulting Emma Jean Douglas. A search warrant of Joe Douglas' residence failed to produce additional evidence in this case. Joe Douglas has refused to submit to a polygraph examination concerning this murder and to attempts by the investigators to interview him.
At this time, investigators do not have any additional leads to pursue in this case. If anyone has information which may be helpful, please contact ASAC Jay Tilley at the Southeastern District Office at 910-486-1262 or the SBI Operations Center at 800-334-3000.
